The Southern Super Series presented by Sunoco, officially kicks off their 2022 season on March 13 at South Alabama Speedway with the running of the 46th Annual Rattler 250.
A longstanding fixture on the Super Late Model national scene, the last 25 years have seen the Rattler rise in prominence, due mostly to the hard work and dedication of Promoter John Dykes and his family. This year’s event will receive a well-deserved boost, courtesy of the Southern Super Series.
John Dykes and his family have done an amazing job cultivating The Rattler into one of the most important Super Late Model events of the year. They continue to strive to make the event better for competitors and fans, and everyone certainly appreciates those efforts. - Tim Bryant, Series Director
"In recognition of 25 years of dedication, and with collaboration of all our great partners, the Southern Super Series is adding an additional $12,500 to an already attractive purse for this year’s race, raising the Winner’s share to $15,000 and the starting money to $1,500.”
Three time winner of The Rattler 250 and current team owner Ronnie Sanders has had the privilege of knowing the Dykes family, and appreciates the effort John has put into the track over the years.
"If you walk in that gate or step on that property, if you see something that has been built, John has had his hands on it," said Sanders. "He tries to do everything. He's hands on. He's not someone to tell someone to do something."
"It's a great family. They all pitch in. He has a lot of capable hands there with his daughters, his son in law, and grandson. Most of the folks you see there are kinfolks to John."
Over the course of its 46 year history, the Rattler 250 has grown into a national event garnering entries from all around the country. In 2021, Seymour, Wisconsin's own Ty Majeski cemented his legacy as a repeat winner of the event, hoisting a trophy already won by an illustrious group of past champions including Christopher Bell, Casey Roderick, Bubba Pollard, Grant Enfinger, Jeff Fultz, Augie Grill, and Harrison Burton.
Since 2014, the Southern Super Series has been proud to be the sanctioning body for the Super Late Model portion of the event, seeing the size and scope of The Rattler 250 grow year over year.
