Racing returns to Gresham Motorsports Park on May 16-17 with the Peach State Classic, headlined by a Super Late Model showdown co-sanctioned by the Southern Super Series and CARS Tour. Excitement is building for that event, the first at the Georgia facility since 2014.
Southern Super Series Director Tim Bryant shared some of that excitement during a recent interview on Speed51’s “The Bullring,” noting that it is a chance to return to an area that has been limited in its pavement racing exposure in recent years.
“There were some great racers from that area,” Bryant said. “When Lanier shut down and Gresham closed up, those guys faded out of the scene, they just weren’t geared up for traveling. I’m hoping and expecting and know of a few who are coming back. That’s what we’re hoping for. In today’s world, it’s so refreshing to see a track re-opening instead of a track closing.
“That is a great facility,” Bryant added. “We’re excited about having the track in great shape and looking forward to a great race.”
Bryant believes the event will be a breath of fresh air, on and off the track. The event will be the first at Gresham since August 9, 2014, when Casey Roderick won the World Crown 300.
Since that time, the pavement has aged, losing some of its color and grip with age. While the cars may go slower now around the half-mile, the venue should produce more side-by-side racing than when it was last utilized.
“In layman’s terms, the pavement went from black to gray, and I think that’s a good sign,” Bryant said. “We definitely are seeing some wear. I’d be very disappointed if we don’t see a lot of side-by-side action at that event.”
An open test for the event will take place on April 18, open to all divisions competing at an affordable rate of $200 per car.
Further details regarding purse and other activities during the Peach State Classic on May 16-17 will be made available soon.
The Wheel Man Racing Series Sportsman competitors and the Trucks will race on Saturday, May 16. The Modifieds of Mayhem and the Super Late Models will race on Sunday, May 17.
