There will be a dozen opportunities for Deep South Super Late Model teams to compete in 2020 with the Southern Super Series presented by Sunoco, as the organization released its 2020 schedule Monday with 12 dates for the new year.
With a return to Gresham Motorsports Park (GA) for the revival of a race track, as well as sanctioning the prestigious All American 400 at Fairgrounds Speedway Nashville (TN), the series will compete 12 times next year.
“The anticipation for the coming season is at a higher level than we’ve ever seen it,” said Southern Super Series Director Tim Bryant. “We’re continually being told by competitors that if they can win in SSS, they can beat anyone, and that makes us proud of our racers. The schedule release will carry us through the Holidays, after which we’ll be announcing some very interesting incentives for 2020.”
The season will once again start at South Alabama Speedway with the Rattler 250, one of the top early-season events in Super Late Model racing. The race will undoubtedly draw some of the top racers in the country on March 20-22.
The next Southern Super Series stop will also be the first Deep South Cranes Blizzard Series event of 2020, taking place on April 24 at Five Flags Speedway (FL). There will be four Blizzard Series events at the home of the Snowball Derby, with races on June 19, July 31 and September 26 at the Pensacola half-mile.
In between the first two Blizzard Series races will be a trio of combination events, sharing sanctioning with other bodies including the CARS Tour and ARCA/CRA Super Series.
The first of those events will be the North/South Super Late Model Challenge at Nashville on May 2, a race in the “Music City” featuring all three sanctioning bodies.
For the first time since August 9, 2014, the Southern Super Series will compete at Gresham Motorsports Park on May 17 alongside the CARS Tour Super Late Models. This will be the first short track racing event held at the track in over five years. Another tri-sanctioned event, the Short Track U.S. Nationals at Bristol Motor Speedway (TN), will be held May 29-30 at the “Last Great Colosseum.”
An event returning to the 2020 Southern Super Series schedule is the Rumble by the River at Montgomery Motor Speedway. The midsummer staple will take place on July 11 at the Alabama half-mile.
The schedule also boasts a trip to Crisp Motorsports Park (GA) for the fourth consecutive year. The Georgia Summer Nationals will take place on August 8.
The points-paying finale of the season will be the Hart to Heart 100 at New Smyrna Speedway for the second year in a row. This year’s Hart to Heart 100 will take place on October 17, with the 2020 Southern Super Series champion being crowned that day.
A big addition to the Southern Super Series schedule in 2020 will be the prestigious All American 400 at Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway on October 20-November 1. This event will be a non-points event, but will give SSS teams a chance to compete in one of Super Late Model racing’s crown jewel events.
Casey Roderick won the series championship in 2019, becoming the first two-time champion in Southern Super Series history. Roderick did so with consecutive titles, successfully defending his 2018 crown.
